Brand new roofs, handrails, cabinets and other improvements have benefited local low-income residents over the years, thanks to the state’s Community Development Block Grant program.

In 2009, Limerick Township is expected to receive $240,000 in CDBG dollars, in addition to approximately $35,000 from the federal stimulus package.

According to program administrator Carl Royer, there is a waiting list for these dollars. Residents qualify based on income.

A recent review of Limerick’s CDBG recipients by What’s the 422 showed the following:

  • A home on Cherry Lane received $13,914 in improvements, including a new iron handrail, aluminum gutters, smoke detectors, faucets and plumbing, as well as drainage improvements surrounding the house.
  • A dwelling on the 100 block of W. Ridge Pike received a new roof, pressure-treated lumber ramp, doors, windows, kitchen cabinets, and a complete re-wiring of the residential trailer – all for $38,637.
  • Homes on Sacco Road and Gerloff Road were the recipients of $10,705 and $3,350 grants, respectively.

Montgomery County municipalities received over $990,000 from the state’s Department of Community and Economic Development, according to state data. This agency serves as the “pass through” for funding from the federal Housing and Urban Development Department.
