Superintendent Marsha Hurda understands that employees of the Spring-Ford Area School District have made significant cutbacks and sacrifices to bring next year’s tax increase to  3.95 percent.

So in an effort to do her part, Hurda will donate her 4 percent raise back to the district. The school board set her salary during Monday’s meeting at $182,073 for the 2009-10 school year.

“I’ll be accepting it and giving it back,” Hurda said, speaking of the raise.

Cathy Regan, a Limerick resident, thanked the superintendent for sending the money back. Regan said she would be surprised if Hurda’s salary amounted to “minimum wage,” given the number of hours she puts in.

Approximately $7,000 will come back to the Spring-Ford Education Foundation as a result. The district has set up a scholarship in memory of Hurda’s mother, who passed away three years ago. Each year, one senior is awarded a $1,000 scholarship for their work in music, broadcast journalism, art and theater.

Also on Monday, the school board approved 2009-10 final budget. At $120,838,710, it is a 3.15 percent increase over last year.

The new property tax millage is $23.07 (per $1,000 in assessed value).
